Here’s the October and November workshops presented by the My Smart Garden program; a joint initiative between the Hobsons Bay and Moonee Valley City Councils

How to build a raingarden workshop

Tuesday 30 October, 4.30pm – 6.30pm
Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre
5 Sargood St, Altona

A raingarden resembles a regular garden but with a major difference – it receives rainwater from hard surfaces such as a downpipe from a roof, paved areas or roads. It’s specially designed so that the soil, gravel and plants slow down and clean stormwater before it enters our creeks and bays. Come learn more about raingardens and help prepare and plant out the raingarden at the community centre.

Perennial food plants workshop and plant swap

Saturday 10 November, 10am – 1pm (includes lunch)
Brooklyn Hall
Cypress Ave, Brooklyn (beside Brooklyn Ten Reserve St)

Instead of needing to sow and harvest vegetables every year, you can learn how to grow food plants that will give you a crop year after year and save you a lot of work.
Come join other gardeners for this celebratory end of year gardening event – there’ll be free lunch, prizes, giveaways, and a plant swap. And most importantly, we want to hear residents’ feedback on Council’s My Smart Garden program.

If you have food plants, cuttings, home grown produce, seedlings or seeds, please feel free to bring them to swap. If you don’t have any, don’t worry and come along anyway!

Seed saving, swapping and end of year celebratory review

Saturday 24 November, 10am – 1pm (includes lunch)
Moonee Ponds Bowling Club, Queens Park
776 Mt Alexander Rd, Moonee Ponds

Saving seeds means you can select seed from your best plants as well as save yourself some money. Come learn how to select, harvest, clean and store from seeds from your vegie garden for next season.
Join other gardeners for this celebratory end of year My Smart Garden event. As well as the seed saving workshop, there’ll be free lunch, prizes, giveaways and a seed and plant swap. But most importantly, on the day we want to hear your feedback on Council’s My Smart Garden program.

Bring your seeds to swap – or any other gardening material for that matter! Home grown produce, plants to divide, seedlings or cuttings are most welcome. If you don’t have any, don’t worry and come along anyway!
