Hi De Chantal,

Thank you for joining the No Road Tunnel, No Freeway camapaign, via my website, by contacting my office or by attending a meeting that I I hosted. The campaign started during the Eddington Report process, when there were a range of hideous roads proposed through our suburbs. It is now focusing on the most present threat – the road tunnel and freeway plan the western suburbs of Melbourne.

Take action!

The government is planning a dirty great road tunnel under Seddon, Footscray and the Maribyrnong River, commencing in 2013. The tunnel’s hellmouth (they call it a “Portal”) will be on Geelong Street, near the Williamstown Road / Sunshine Road / Geelong Road intersection, with a smoke stack nearby.

From the tunnel, they say there will be a freeway to the ring road, but they won’t say where (we know the early plans ripped through residential areas in West Footscray and West Sunshine).

Luckily, there are two brilliant residents groups that are right on to it. All we need to do is support them, help them, join them and turn up.

Turn up: Community rally, Saturday 21 November 2009, 12 noon, Nicholson Street Mall, Footscray – click here for a flier.

Help them: Hand out fliers at railway stations next week, in the cool of the morning. I’m doing Middle Footscray, but could do with some help. Nobody is covering Seddon station yet – how about you? What about your local station? They need volunteers for Sunshine, West Footscray, Tottenham and Footscray. Even if you can just turn up to your station 15 minutes early before your train to help, they would appreciate it.

Join them: No Freeway 4 West Footscray and Brimbank Transport Action Group – they are non-political, savvy and in your neighbourhood.

Support them: My support includes taking action in parliament and the community. I have launched a new Facebook page and have a campaign page your friends can sign up to on the Greens MPs website. I have written a public statement on the issue, in the form of a leaflet, and has produced some neato stickers for your car, fence, window or bicycle – drop in to collect some, or drop me a line.

Thanks and best wishes,
